Why disk defragmentation?
Surely there are few novice PC users who can answer the question of what disk defragmentation is and why it is needed, and the reason for this is a lack of computer experience. However, sooner or later, any user will need the answer to this question, and therefore it is worthwhile to dwell on this issue in more detail.
What is fragmentation?
The operating system, whatever it is, does not always have the ability to place the data of a file in such a way that it is a single whole. If necessary, the system writes these file data not in whole, but in separate fragments, and as a result of such recording file fragmentation appears.
In other words, the file is written in separate parts and is not a single whole. In addition, situations often arise in which it is impossible to write a whole file due to the lack of free space on the hard drive. But at the same time, a certain number of unoccupied zones, free “pieces”, in which you can place the file in parts, always remains on the disk.
The bottom line is this: if you want to delete such a “torn” file and do it, then the place that is freed up after removal will remain fragmented – as if occupied. And of course, this state of things will directly affect the speed of your computer: the higher the overall fragmentation of the disk, the better your PC will be. How to deal with this problem? The answer is obvious: carry out a procedure called defragmentation of the hard drive, which will make it possible to significantly accelerate the operation of a computer device.
How to defragment a disk
Defragmenting a drive is not at all difficult. Such a process as defragmentation of a railway computer is carried out using a special program. In Windows operating systems, this utility is installed as standard, and it is called Disk Defragmenter (“Disk Defragmenter”). There are several ways to open and run a program. You can use any of them.
To find the program, go to the “Start” menu, select the “All Programs” tab, then click on the line “Standard, Utilities” and then click on “Disk Defragmenter”.
You can start the defragmentation process by rail in another way, namely:
1) open the “My Computer” window,
2) select the hard drive that you want to defragment,
3) place the cursor on this disk, press the right mouse button and select the “Properties” tab,
4) the “Local Disk Properties” window opens in front of you, in which click on the “Service” item,
5) select the option “Defragment”.
The easiest way to help defragment a disk on your computer is to run defragmentation using the so-called command line. To do this, go to the “Start” menu and select “Run” there. A small window will open in front of you, in the field of which enter the entry “dfrg.msc”. That’s all!
Whatever method you use, the result will be the same – the “Disk Defragmenter” window should open. Now let’s talk directly about the defragmentation process itself.
Disk Defragmenter utility consists of two stages. First, the program analyzes the hard disk to determine if it needs defragmentation at all. After making sure of the need for the latter, the program proceeds to the second stage – directly defragmentation. You should take such action. First, select the disk that will be defragmented and click on the “Analysis” button.
A little time will pass during which the utility will analyze the hard drive, after which it will inform you that it considers it advisable to defragment the disk. In this case, you can either start the process, or postpone it for later. But if at the end of the analysis you see a message stating that the defragmentation procedure is necessary, you should definitely do it.
You should know that the defragmentation process can take quite a while. And during this process, it is advisable not to work at the computer. Tune in to rest! After the defragmentation is completed, you can look at the assessment of the use of railway before and after the process.
You will see 4 zones:
1) red areas are fragmented,
2) dark blue areas – unfragmented,
3) white areas – free disk space,
4) green areas – files that have not been moved. These files cannot be defragmented, that is, moved, since they are part of the operating system.
Each PC user should periodically start the process of defragmenting PC hard drives in order to speed up the work of the latter. Computer performance will not become extremely high from this, but you will notice that the PC starts to work faster.
In addition, before starting defragmentation, it is advisable to use a special program, for example CCleaner, and clean the hard drives from debris.
