How to choose components and assemble a computer yourself

Many people who want to have a personal computer do not want to purchase ready-made, already equipped equipment and prefer to assemble a computer on their own, choosing the necessary components individually. The choice of hardware depends on the purpose for which you need a PC. If you are not going to use it for complex graphic and design projects, if you are not a professional in the field of Hardware and do not plan to play resource-intensive modern games, the choice will not be especially difficult for you. Let’s talk about this in more detail and consider in detail what kind of components you will need for a regular PC – “hard workers”.

Build a PC yourself: start with the processor

For a personal computer, on which you simply type text and work with information databases, you do not need a high-power processor. The main parameter in this case is the clock frequency, which should not be less than 2 GHz. Otherwise, it will happen that the processor will not be able to pull such OSes as Vista and Windows 7.

If you want to build a PC yourself to work with multimedia files (with video or high-resolution images), you need a more powerful processor. The best option is single-core AMD processors (frequency – from 3 GHz) and Intel (from 2.5 GHz) or dual-core AMD (from 1.8 GHz) and Intel (from 1.5 GHz). Be sure to find out how much power the processor consumes: this will be needed for the correct choice of power supply.

Various RAM modules differ in speed of operation and memory size. For low-weight files, which are text files, small RAM is suitable for you – in the range of 256-512 MB. In the case of multimedia and 3D objects, you need more RAM – from 512 MB to 1 GB. The DDR II generation will probably suit you – such a memory will be optimal for any job.

Video card selection

For “textual” work, you definitely don’t need a good graphics card. Therefore, choose any card from the Nvidia or ATI series, with a RAM capacity of 128 MB. For the “multimedia”, select a video card with a larger capacity. Such a card should not be expensive, but its memory should be at least 256 MB (better – 512 MB).

Choose any motherboard, without any tricks and frills. Only two things are important to you:

1) the system board must have at least two USB ports;

2) the card must be combined with the above components.

When choosing components for a PC, choose a hard drive of your choice – with the amount of memory that you need more. As for the interface, it should be SATA or IDE.

Power Supply

The power supply should have the same (preferably slightly larger) power rating that the processor consumes. You do not need a too powerful PSU, especially since this directly affects the cost.

System case

When you want to assemble a PC case it does not matter – choose the one whose appearance you like best.

Air cooling system

The computer on which it is supposed to work with text files can do with the most ordinary fan. For work requiring more resources, it is better to choose not a fan, but an air cooling system, and the more powerful it will be, the better.

Monitor and Resolution

For “text” work, you can restrict yourself to a monitor with a low resolution. Remember: the higher the resolution, the more severe the system will be subjected to heavy loads, and you cannot boast of its special power. But when it comes to video and images, you need to act on their size. For a professional designer, you need a monitor with an average or large (22-24 inches) diagonal and a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels or higher. With more modest requirements, a resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels will be sufficient.

Mouse and keyboard

When you need to equip your PC with external devices – a mouse and keyboard, everything happens the other way around. In other words, to work with texts, you need a good keyboard, divided into parts for the left and right hands (the so-called broken). A good keyboard is quite expensive, but you will soon realize that it is worth it. To work with multimedia files, a good keyboard is completely unnecessary, so buy a regular, the most inexpensive one.

As for the mouse, its choice depends on the features of your work. For texts, you can choose any, even the most simple mouse. But if you need to carry out certain precise operations with images, it is advisable to purchase a highly sensitive mouse. She will be able to more accurately transmit any hand movements, which will make it possible to more conveniently work with the smallest details.

Choose which one you like, but it is desirable that the drive has the functions of reading and writing DVDs.

Thus, to assemble a PC on your own is not as difficult a task as it seems, and even “dummies” can afford it. You will definitely deal with it.
